The Hunter Exam is probably what I've reread most of this manga and it still feels like a bit of a sludge. The pace is so wild and characters get introduced and killed so quickly that it's confusing, I know I've been told this manga gets better the longer it goes but having to re-read this start no less than 3 times is a DRAG. Luckily I like the characters and seeing the critters...
I really hate that the first drop out of the Hunter's exam is the fat child prodigy U_U like. of course. The gourmet hunters always gave me Gorillaz vibes. FUCK Tonpa though. GOD.
Gon and Killua give BIG Sonic and Knuckles vibes, respectively.

Vol. 3
MONKE.
Sad that he is another victim of. There for a couple pages.
Pinhead guy getting his target and immediately burying himself in the dirt is a MOOD. Me in hunger games minecraft.

Vol. 4
U_U all the characters I like or think are interesting either die immediately or are taken out of the story immediately. I think this is another frustrating aspect to the manga because I'm struggling to remember who is who and then when I do they get killed/removed.

This is probably my least favorite part yet in so far as introducing a bunch of cool characters just to kill them off. I was so hype for Shadow Beasts.

Gonna list them and their abilities as they appear because like fuck will I remember otherwise.
Franklin [Emitter] - He modified his fingertips into guns, from which he shoots out chunks of aura (nen bullets). Of course, this would be possible without cutting the fingers off, but he did it because he felt "it would be more effective." In fact, the destructive force of each bullet improved dramatically. Willingness to go the extra mile and the addition of restrictions can greatly enhance nen abilities.

Shizuku [Conjurer] - She uses Blinky, a conjured vacuum cleaner, as a weapon. It sucks up anything that Shizuku wants; However, it cannot suck up anything that she considers living. It can also regurgitate the last thing it sucked up. Not even Shizuku knows where it all goes.

Machi [Transmuter] - She spins her aura into threads. The tensile strength of a strand will be inversely proportional to its length. A strand equivalent to a cotton thread can be spun long enough to circle the globe. A strand can be strong enough to support a one-ton weight if it's shorter than one millimeter. However, the strength of a thread is reduced as soon as she lets go. This is because conjurers and transmuters are not good at emission (discharging aura).

Uvogin (Enhancer] - His only interests are strength training and winning street fights. He focuses his entire aura into his fist to produce his Big Bang Impact, which has the destructive force of a small missile. His goal is to hone his punch until it creates a blast equivalent to a nuclear bomb.

Kurapika - Conjurer/Specialist

YEAHH... I think some places in the world are safer than others and I assume regular people are protected by hunters in some capacity but also.. civilians get killed a lot in this series too so. You got scary hunters that can kill you and you got corrupt politicians/people in power, just like in real life but there's also nen powers and shit involved!!!!!! And you also got a lot of scary animals that can kill you.

NGL introducing characters just to kill them off is REALLY tiring for me. I'm trying to remember who each character is and their faces (VERY DIFFICULT FOR ME!) and then the energy is wasted on the next page.
And yeah, Phantom Troupe did that. The constant introduction and killing off of characters is my biggest gripe with the series so far. It's just exhausting.

My favorite character, [looks at hand] Chrollo Lusilfer.
I still wonder if he just copies abilities or if he copies and steals them, it still hasn't been explained clearly to me yet. As always, big fan of his indoor fishys. Again it says he 'steals' but I haven't seen yet if they go away from the og user.
This is like the third dude with sad squinty eyes who is all big and scary and then dies immediately. Do not get drawn with those eyes man.

Chrollo conducting a symphony while the Troupe kill everyone is again reminiscent of Hellsing [villain does similar in that].

It's pretty funny that Killua's brother actively interfered with his father/grandfather's doings. I bet that was awkward dinner conversation, like, oh, sorry, you lost out on a billion dollarydoos because I killed your client.

Shalnark [Manipulator] - Manipulates people with his one-of-a-kind cellphone by attaching its antenna to his target. The target is under Shalnark's complete control until the antenna is removed.
Literally school shooter material. Hate. What the fuck are these names.

Kortopi [Conjurer] - By touching an object with his left hand, he can create an exact replica with his right hand. He cannot replicate living things, except as inanimate objects. The copies last 24 hours, then vanish, regardless of the object's size.

Every time Chrollo says something serious he gets drawn realistically and it makes me laugh. He's the 'how hungry?' meme...

Pakunoda (Specialist) - She can 'read' memories by touching people and objects (psychometry). By firing conjured bullets that are loaded with those memories, she can implant them in others. But if a bullet hits the person from whom the memories were read, he loses those memories.
Okay she's the scariest one so far imo.

Neon Nostrade (Specialist) - She predicts the future through quatrains that she writes down unconciously, the target must handwrite his name (aliases and handles count), birth date (including the year), and blood type on the piece of paper on which she will write the poem. (A picture of the target's face is necessary if he isn't present). Inauspicious fortunes always contain advice, and misfortune can be avoided if the warnings are heeded. She cannot predict her own future.

AM I GOING TO SEE DOGS DIE AND ANOTHER COOL NEN USER DIE TOO? Togashi what the actual fuck though??? x_x This is. exhausting.

Squala (Manipulator) - He takes complete care of his dogs in exchange for their services. They can work as guard dogs, run errands, or go on spying missions. (They can even carry out complex conversations, using their barks much like morse code.)

Vol. 13
Another fun thing is that both HXH and Hellsing be doin' airships. It's so funny there's airships?? I assume its because they're much easier to draw than airplanes x)

Melody (Emitter) - She emits her aura along with the music she plays to ease other's fatigue. She has exceptional hearing, and can perceive a person's psychological state by listening to the rhythm of his heartbeat.

Chrollo Lucifer (Specialist) - He can steal other people's Nen Abilities and use them as his own. He files the ability in a conjured book (Bandit's Secret), from which he can draw it out at will. Once stolen, the victim will no longer be able to use the ability.
1. He must fulfill 4 requirements to steal an ability:
- See the ability at work with his eyes.
- Ask questions about nen, and the victim responds with an answer.
- Place the victim's palm on the handprint on the book's cover.
- Parts A, B, C must be completed in an hour.
2. To use an ability, the book must be held open in his right hand to the page with the desired ability.
3. An ability will be removed from the book when its original owner dies.
so he DOES like actually steal them... RIP Neon..

This MMORPG is awful, noobs immediately get griefed or killed and there's zero tutorial. Bad game design, but then again, made by Hunters who make exams that are needlessly complex and stupid, so I guess it fits.
I'm gonna be real with you I ain't reading this entire fuckin' table of spell cards LOL. You can tell, unfortunately, that this isn't YGO.
Also bad game design that the cards are so limiting that only 400 people can even have a basic map card. Hunters must not have a game designer branch....

I am NOT remembering all of the Nen vocab words. It is all abstract shounen power scales anyway.
Again these plot points are so funny and sort of feel like Togashi is just throwing things at the wall or pulling plot points out of a hat. Just randomly making some guy (who I don't we've learned the name of?) The Bomber is so funny. Oh he's planted BOMBS in us? Like the Spongebob episode? The Pie we ate was a BOMB? Oh and now we're playing an advanced game of freeze tag to disarm the bombs? Nice. U_U But then characters we got introduced to that I like get killed by the bombings so, AGAIN Togashi, whyyyy. At least they didn't have names. WAIT HES NOT DEAD? At least not yet. OH WE HAVE A NAME. Abengane. I'm a little ehhh at his Nen ability playing into stereotypes BUT I still like him. So I'm sure he will die LOL.
I like how the Phantom Troupe just accept getting yeeted off Greed Island because they entered it illegally. I expected a fight but they just went, 'well, that's fair.' And got teleported away.

HISOKA PUT YOUR PANTS BACK ON. THERE ARE CHILDREN HERE. Also real talk I didn't think Hisoka was into women. I am not surprised he'd spend time in the sex area of greed island dsjfidsofoisff.

Escaped Greed Island and absolutely nothing was gained except. A necklace. LOL. It's nice that Togashi put so much effort into the greed island cards but............................ it feels like expended effort that he could have put toward other things? Though I'm gonna be haunted by Pregnancy Rock for the duration of this manga. It could come back.

Togashi has really been drawing some...frankly racist caricature designs in side characters this volume so far. Not a fan.

I really liked Canary, the one young butler from Killua's mansion, would be nice to see them again.

GYRO...it wasn't super clear [to me]. So he was a human who is now an ant but his human will was so strong it's carried over? Is that what I am to deduce? Not the worst name ever but I'm gonna be thinkin' about the food the entire arc now.

Knuckles and Shoot, he shoulda named him sonic smh, and I assume Shoot's gonna biff it because he too has the sad slanted eyes. No one in HXH lives long if you get drawn with those eyes.
I'm also happy Togashi got to get Sadako in HXH, I know she's pretty busy playing Baseball with Kayako Saeki.

Neferpitou - Meowth Girl. I see the Nefertiti in there so there's reference to an Egpytian Dynasty, so I get the cat theme. Pitou just sounds like the sound of someone spitting.

THEY DIDN'T SAY BISHOUNEN'S NAME AGAIN LOL Shaiapouf - I'm REALLY surprised this Bishounen Royal Guard fuck isn't a favorite he just unleashed butterfly wings. Oh shit it's the Phantom Troop or the Spiders or whoever. It's been so long since we've seen any of them I nearly forgor, what with the giant ants and all. Also Togashi did you just call the US trash.
And the 'new ant queen' be doing some cell shit with her tail. I really do not like this cell shit with the tail and I hope she dies soon.
Oh my god, the dancing warriors with the holes in their bodies...just like that Spongebob episode...there's a lot of Spongebob to be said about this manga, what with the Bombs and such.


It's funny that the spider man-ant is well, a man. Because usually it is the female spiders that spin the webs. I shouldn't be so surprised that the Spiders decimated the chimera ants, but, I was hoping for at least one of them to die in the fray. Also is Feitan speaking Chinese or something else? Is his speech pattern kinda...not great?

Back with Gon and Killua, yea this isolated country is 100% based on North Korea ain't it.

Some problem I HAVE been having with this manga over and over again is sometimes I struggle to recognize when a speech bubble is..well..speech and when it's thought.
