What are yinz's opinions on such? I know the general consensus is that AI generation often uses living artists' work without their permission, effectively stealing their work for a fraction of the cost - thus, it is Bad.
But various art programs also use a form of AI to run various tasks, such as CSP's color fill mode. Not to mention some AI programs can also be used by law enforcement in identifying protestors or anyone accused of a crime. However, I've also seen artists use AI to help with workflow; namely, using a prompt as a base and working off of it, as usually the AI can generate a good shape, though not a detailed one. Upon trying to find my favorite example, however, I saw the artist deleted it, probably due to the backlash?
Honestly? If the AI source was just, wikipedia or another creative commons image library, I think it could be a really useful tool. I'd love to take the vague shapes it made and create something from it - when I did a few Dall-E prompts with my username I got blurry pokemon shaped things, and I want to return to those someday...but of course, sharing it would be risky due to what AI is DOING to artists and the artistic community. I wouldn't mind having an AI generator that was just for my own personal use and used my own art as its source, I'd love to use it to study my art or again, get basic concepts down when I was struggling. I wish it was less of a 'this is going to destroy the industry' thing and more of a novelty entertainment thing, akin to gunpowder being used for fireworks instead of, well, guns.
